  • Cheti Chand Ji Sesa ~ AlifBe~15

    April 13, 2021 - By Alka Keswani

Today (13th April 2021) is Cheti Chand and we, the Sindhis, celebrate it as our New year, with great enthusiasm. Why do Sindhis Celebrate Cheti Chand? The legend says that people in Sindh (Now in Pakistan) were tortured by an arrogant ruler named Mirikshah who tried to force Hindu Sindhis to accept Islam. Sindhis being followers of Varun Devta, Lord of Waters, gathered on the banks of holy Sindhu (Indus) River and prayed for some miracle to save them. After fasting and praying for many days there was an akashvani that the Lord Vishnu will soon take birth in an…

    Jhang Pulao~ AlifBe~13

    April 10, 2021 - By Alka Keswani

We are now at the 13th letter of Sindhi alphabet, the AlifBe and the consonant is جهہ as in Jhelum or Jhansi. It is written as ‘Jh‘ in Roman and as झ in Devanagari. Points to note: Some of you who are learning AlifBe with me have asked why the letters appear to be different when used in words as compare to when written individually. Please note that many Sindhi letters are formed differently depending upon their individual position in a word. For instance, just check how جهہ is written varyingly depending on its position in any word. Since this…

  • Sindh Da Swad~Sindhi Food Pop Up At Punjab Grill

    April 11, 2019 - By Alka Keswani

Sindhi Food Pop Up!!!! And I am back to blogging! It feels really strange to accept the fact that I have been ignoring the blog since long but I can easily put the blame on the rough times me and my extended family had been through (more about that in my next post)! And while life could be really mean to you, yet there are moments when you can’t help but wonder how comforting and buoyant some incidents could be! Thanks to my blog, I have met many amazing people, online as well as offline, often discussing at length, the nitty-gritties…

    Chembur~Sindhi Food Heaven

    November 16, 2017 - By Alka Keswani

Chembur, a place where my mother was born and brought up, obviously holds a very special place in my heart. I have many fond memories of the times when our school holidays were all about visiting our naani’s home and being pampered by grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. During Ganpati festival, my maasi (Mother’s sister), aunts, cousins and few people from their neighborhood would take us out for pandal hopping, post dinner. Starting from small pandals in close vicinity we would visit distant ones, for Ganpati darshan, including the one in Rk studio with anticipation of spotting some bollywood celebrities…

  • Tomato Soup~Just For You

    January 18, 2009 - By Alka Keswani

The recipe of this wonderful Tomato soup is highly inspired by Mansi’s Restaurant style tomato soup. Ingredients:   Tomatoes (red and ripe) 6-8 ( I used 7 medium sized as seen in pic) Onion 1, finely chopped 3 cloves  3 -4 black pepper corns 1 Kamaal Patt (Tej Patta) 5 cloves of garlic 1/2 inch of dalchini or even less (optional if you don’t have it) 1-2 tsp of butter or more Salt as per taste Red chili powder less than 1/4 tsp (or adjust as per your taste but always add red chili powder after whole soup is ready)…

Memories are myopic? Are they?? Well I don’t completely agree to this belief, since I am amongst those who dwell in beautiful past. I hate to look at reprehensible stuff around me, but unfortunately I am always forced to throw myself in pits of gloom, corruption, political vested interests and rising prices and declining bank balances. Pity, I can’t turn my eyes off the budging ugly head of terrorism and hatred but I wish I was allowed to be self occupied, innocent, energetic and bubbly kid forever and ever and ever! Well, I don’t wear wishbones where my backbone ought…
